The Martians cause panic [1948]

Hundreds of Ecuadorians hid in mountains when a Quito radio station transmitted The War of tje Worlds, according to Orson Welles' radio version, translated to Spanish and adapted to the circumstances of that South American nation.

The panic spread in the coast and the mountainous area and many incautious listeners looked to the thickness of the mountains and the hiding places to avoid to be captured by the Martians who, according to the wireless fiction, already had invaded the planet Earth.

Only history was repeated. Ten years back Orson Welles, of only 23 years and who would himself turn into one of the main innovators of the cinema, had done the same in New York, when he adapted the novel The War of the Worlds, by Herbert George Wells, and caused great alarm in all the east coast of the United States.
